Vegan Orange "Chicken" - Vegetarian / Vegan Friendly Recipe

As for the dish; this one's a home run for sure. Savory, crunchy sweet, and delicious! A favorite vegan recipe! It takes a little time, and love, but i'll tell you one thin. Its worth it!

Vegan Orange “Chicken”
(Vegetarian - Vegan Recipe. By Eric, TheVeggieNerd)



Ingredients:
“Chicken” - Batter
  • 1 Lb - Wheat Gluten Strips/Soy protein - Cut into 1 Inch bite size pieces.
  • ¾ Cup - Whole Wheat Flour.
  • ½ Tsp - Salt
  • ¼ Tsp - Baking Powder
  • ¾ Cup - Water
(Oil for frying. Either stove top, or deep fryer)
Sauce
  • ½ Cup - Orange Juice - Preferably fresh
  • 1 Tbsp - Soy Sauce
  • ¼ Cup - Brown Sugar
  • 2 Cloves - Garlic - Finely Minced
  • 1 Tsp - Freshly Grated Ginger
  • 1-2 Tsp - Freshly Grated Orange Peel
  • 2-3 - Green Onions - Chopped
  • 1 Tsp - Cornstarch
  • 1 Tsp - Crushed Red Pepper Flake
  • ½ Tbsp - Lemon Juice
  • 1 Tbs - Canola Oil

Process:
“Chicken”
  1. Start off by heating up your oil to approx 360-375 °F. (If cooking on stove top, use a small sprinkle of water, if the oil crackles your oil should be ready)
  2. Cut meat replacer into 1 Inch peices.
  3. Combine in a small bowl, Flour, Water, Baking Powder, and Salt. (If batter is too thick, add a bit of water at a time to thin it out)
  4. Dip replacer into batter, and carefully place into your oil. Let fry for about 3 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Remove from oil, and place on some paper towls, or a clean kitchen towel. Repeat a few pieces at a time, until all are done.
Sauce
  1. Combine, and whisk together your orange juice, lemon juice, brown sugar and cornstarch until all ingredients have dissolved.
  2. Moving to the stove, heat your canola oil in a large wok, or skillet. with the reserved orange juice mixture set aside. combine all the remaining sauce ingredients into the wok, and fry for one minute.
  3. Pour orange juice mixture into the wok, and heat until boiling. Cut the heat.
  4. Add your fried chicken, and carefully fold in to coat with sauce. - Serve immediately!

(Serve with rice, or Asian Style noodles, and garnish with fresh orange slices, baby spinach  and sesame seeds.)
